How to File an Individual Tax Return Extension
The easiest way to file an extension for your individual return is to make a payment to the IRS before April 15.
If you pay using IRS electronic payment options, you do not need to file Form 4868. The IRS will automatically grant your extension when you designate the payment as an extension (here are some instructions on making an extension payment).
Ways to File an Extension:
Pay electronically (recommended): This automatically files your extension—no separate form required.
File Form 4868 online: Use IRS Free File or tax software to submit Form 4868 electronically. You will receive a confirmation once submitted.
Mail Form 4868: Print and complete Form 4868 and mail it by April 15th. It must be postmarked by this date. Mailing addresses vary by state—use the instructions included with the form to find the correct IRS address for your location. We recommend mailing via certified mail (with tracking) for proof of timely filing.
