
How to Make a California State Extension Payment
This payment can be handled online by going to ftb.ca.gov/pay. This payment should be made no later than April 15. Select the payment method, select Personal, enter your personal information and go from there.
- Choose Your Payment Method
- Depending on the payment method selected, the following screens may appear slightly different (the screenshots below use the “Bank Account” payment method). On the next screen, you should click the blue button under the Personal section.
- Login by entering your Social Security Number and Last Name, then hit the blue Login > button.
- Confirm your personal information on the next screen.
- Payment Type should be an Extension Payment (Form 3519), then hit the blue Continue > button.
- On the Payment Information screen, select the tax year (should be the previous year since you are extending the filing of your return), indicate the recommended extension payment amount to the state of California, select the date for the payment (remember it must be before April 15!), and indicate whether you are filing jointly (single filer would choose “no”, married filing jointly spouses would choose “yes”), then hit the blue Continue > button.
- Enter your payment information and hit the blue Continue > button.
- And you're done!
